No fewer than thirteen people perish and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.
A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in public works. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
